Albanian food is the country's best-kept secret — Ottoman roots, Italian technique, mountain ingredients, grandmothers in charge. The cooking class is how you take it home: four hours of cooking, eating and drinking with hosts who treat the kitchen like a family celebration.
What the class is
Small group (usually 6–12), a home-style kitchen or cooking studio in central Tirana, and a menu of the classics done properly. You will roll byrek pastry until your hands learn the motion, assemble tavë kosi (the national baked lamb-and-yogurt dish), make a seasonal salad with the kind of tomatoes that do not exist in northern supermarkets, and finish with a simple dessert. The hosts cook alongside you, explaining not just the how but the why — who taught them, which village does it differently, what raki is actually for. Then the table is laid and you eat everything, with local wine and raki included and flowing. Nobody leaves hungry; several guests per month reportedly leave emotional.

When and why to book it
The class runs all year, lunch and evening sessions — which makes it our favourite answer to three questions: “what if it rains?”, “what do we do in winter?”, and “what is actually fun with teenagers/parents/a mixed group?”. Winter visitors especially: when the mountains are closed, this is the single best afternoon in Tirana, followed by the pub crawl if you pace the raki wisely. In summer the evening session pairs perfectly after a morning at Bovilla. Book 2–5 days ahead in season (groups are small and sell out), less the rest of the year; same-week is often possible. Tell us your date, group size and any dietary needs — we confirm the session and menu in one message.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need any cooking skills?
None — the class is built for beginners and the hosts are used to guests who have never made pastry. You will leave having genuinely made byrek from scratch; everyone manages, everyone eats.
Are drinks really included?
Yes — local wine and raki flow through the cooking and the meal, plus soft drinks and water. It is a cooking class, Albanian style: the toasts are part of the curriculum.
Can you handle dietary requirements?
Vegetarian is easy and standard; vegan and gluten-free versions are possible with notice. Tell us everything when booking so the menu is planned properly around you.
Is it suitable for children?
Yes — kids from about 6 love the hands-on pastry work, and the hosts are family people. Evening sessions lean adult thanks to the raki; lunch sessions are perfect for families.
