Shala River & Komani Lake — Albania's Most Dramatic Day

A fjord that is not a fjord, a river so clear it looks filtered, and thirteen hours you will retell for years. The long, epic, absolutely-worth-it day trip — May to October.

Ask anyone who has done it: the Shala River day is the one they show people photos of. Lake Komani's ferry ride through a drowned canyon, then a hidden river of impossible turquoise — it is a long day, and it is the best long day in Albania.

How the day runs

Very early pick-up in Tirana (around 5:30–6:00 — the ferry waits for no one) and north to Komani. Then two hours on the legendary ferry through Lake Komani: sheer walls, hamlets clinging to rock, water so still it doubles the mountains — routinely compared to Norwegian fjords by people who have seen both. At the Shala mouth you transfer to a small boat up the Shala River — and the colour changes: turquoise, glass-clear, cold. The riverside has simple beach bars, sunbeds, and lunch spots (grilled fish and mountain lamb); the afternoon is swimming, cliff-admiring, rope-swinging for the brave, and general disbelief. Return ferry, drive home, Tirana by about 20:00–21:00. Tired, happy, phone full.

Practical notes

Season: May to October — the river runs cold even in August (that first swim is a jolt; the second is bliss), and the route closes in the wet months. June and September are the sweet spot: warm air, fewer crowds than peak July–August, when weekend departures sell out 1–2 weeks ahead. Bring swimwear, towel, reef shoes if you have them (pebbles), sunscreen, a warm layer for the ferry wind, and cash. Not suitable for anyone who cannot manage boat boarding and pebble beaches — tell us and we will be honest about fit. For mountain lovers, this pairs perfectly with the Theth–Valbona 3-day as the water counterpart. Message us your date and group size — we confirm departure, availability and exact price in minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Is the 5:30 start really necessary?

Yes — the Komani ferry runs to its own schedule, and missing it ends the day before it begins. Everyone grumbles at the alarm and thanks it later. Sleep on the drive north; the scenery wakes you up at the ferry.

Can you actually swim? How cold is it?

Absolutely — that is half the point. The Shala is mountain-cold (refreshing-to-bracing even in August) and astonishingly clear. Most guests spend hours in and out of the water; the sunbeds handle the recovery.

Is the day suitable for children or older travellers?

Children who swim confidently love it. The logistics (early start, boats, pebble shore) need basic mobility — tell us who is travelling and we will advise honestly, including gentler alternatives.

Group or private?

The group tour from €65 is excellent and the norm here — the ferry is shared anyway. Private mainly buys you timing flexibility and your own vehicle; ask us if you are 4+ and want the comparison.
