Gjirokastër is Albania's second UNESCO city and its most dramatic: slate roofs stacked up a mountainside under one of the biggest castles in the Balkans. It is a long day from Tirana — private makes it a comfortable one.
How the day works
Pick-up around 7:30 for the 3-hour drive south (comfort stops whenever you like). Late morning in Gjirokastër: the huge castle with its clock tower, artillery and the captured US spy plane, then down into the old bazaar and a visit inside a traditional tower-house (Skenduli or Zekate). Lunch on local specialities — qifqi rice balls and mountain lamb. Home by evening.

Is the drive worth it?
Honestly: yes. The road crosses the Muzina pass with views over the Dropull valley, and the city itself is unlike anything else in the country — Berat is white and graceful, Gjirokastër is grey and defiant. Private, you break the drive with photo stops and a coffee in Tepelenë if you like.
When to go and how to book
All year. Spring and autumn are ideal; in summer start early to walk the bazaar before the heat. Date and group size on WhatsApp — confirmed within the hour.
Frequently asked questions
How long is the drive?
About 3 hours each way on a good road, with stops whenever you want them — that is the private advantage. Total day: 11–12 hours.
Can we add the Blue Eye spring?
Yes — the famous Blue Eye (Syri i Kaltër) is 40 minutes from Gjirokastër. See our Gjirokastër & Blue Eye tour, or just ask on WhatsApp.
Is there much climbing?
The castle is at the top of a steep old town — we drive to the upper gate, so the walking is mostly downhill. Comfortable shoes recommended for the cobbles.
What is the spy plane story?
In the castle sits a US Air Force plane forced down in 1957 — displayed by the regime as a trophy. Your guide will tell you the whole Cold War episode.
