Ohrid Day Trip from Tirana — the Balkans' Oldest Lake Town

Across the mountains into North Macedonia: Ohrid's UNESCO old town, Byzantine churches and a lake so clear it looks tropical — a full private day with the border handled for you.

From €115 per groupPrivate vehicle & driverBorder handledAll year round

Ohrid has been called the Jerusalem of the Balkans — 365 churches, they used to say, one for every day — on the shore of one of Europe's oldest and clearest lakes. Two hours from Tirana, it is the easiest international day trip we arrange and one of the most rewarding.

How the day runs

Hotel pick-up in Tirana, then east over the mountains to the Qafë Thanë border — your driver handles the formalities — and down to the lake. The morning is the old town on foot: cobbled lanes climbing past Byzantine churches, St. John at Kaneo perched on its cliff above the water (the photo you have already seen, better in person), the ancient theatre, and if you have the legs, Samuel's Fortress for the panorama. Lunch lakeside — the local Ohrid trout if you eat fish — then the afternoon flexes: more churches and the bazaar, a boat cruise on the lake (seasonal, ~€10–15, highly recommended), or coffee on the promenade watching the clearest water in Europe do its thing. Home by evening, crossing back as the light drops over the lake.

Good to know

Runs all year — Ohrid is a lived-in town and winter lake light is beautiful, though the boat cruises pause. Summer adds swimming possibilities; spring and autumn are perfect. Documents: most passports (EU, UK, US) cross visa-free — tell us your nationality when booking and we confirm. The drive is about two hours each way on decent roads. Compared with the Montenegro day, Ohrid is cheaper, calmer and less driving; Kotor is the more dramatic scenery. Have both days free? Do both — they are genuinely different countries. Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa for North Macedonia?

EU, UK and US passport holders enter visa-free, and most travellers need nothing beyond a passport. Tell us your nationality when booking and we will confirm both entry and Albanian re-entry requirements.

Is the boat cruise on the lake included?

It is optional (~€10–15, seasonal) and highly recommended — Ohrid from the water, approaching Kaneo's cliff, is the best angle of the day. Your driver times the day around it if you want it.

How does Ohrid compare to the Montenegro day trip?

Ohrid is cheaper (from €115 vs €195), less driving, calmer and more cultural; Kotor is the more dramatic scenery. Both are full days with borders handled. Honestly, if you have the days, they pair beautifully.

Can we swim in Lake Ohrid?

In season (June–September), yes — the lake is famously clean and there are beach spots your driver knows. Bring swimwear; the water is cold, clear and completely worth it.
