The Albanian Alps — the “Accursed Mountains” — are the most spectacular landscape in the country, and the Theth-to-Valbona crossing is the single best way through them: three days, one legendary hike, and logistics handled by a structured operator so you only carry a daypack.
The three days
Day 1: hotel pick-up in Tirana, drive north via Shkodra to Komani, and the famous ferry across Lake Komani — two hours through a drowned canyon that looks like a fjord — then up into Theth: the stone church, the Lock-in Tower, dinner at your guesthouse. Day 2: the crossing itself — Valbona Pass, 1,795 m, roughly 6–7 hours and 1,000 m of ascent, with views that get into outdoor magazines; your main luggage travels by vehicle and meets you in Valbona over dinner. Day 3: morning in the Valbona valley, then the return via the Drin valley and Shkodra, back in Tirana by evening. Semi-private small groups as standard; fully private versions on request.

Why book through us
Because multi-day mountains are where operator quality matters most. We only work with structured Albanian tour partners for this route: licensed vehicles, guides who know the pass in fog as well as sun, guesthouses that expect you, and a real contingency plan if weather closes the pass. Hotel pick-up in Tirana, one WhatsApp thread for all planning, indicative price published here and exact quote confirmed before you commit. Free for you — the operator pays our referral fee.
Fitness, gear and season
The pass day suits anyone who hikes occasionally: 6–7 hours with breaks, no technical sections in summer conditions. You need hiking shoes with grip, a layer system (valley heat, pass wind), a rain shell, and a daypack for water and snacks — everything else goes by vehicle. Season: May to October; snow closes the pass the rest of the year. June and September are the golden months — wildflowers or autumn colour, fewer groups. Book 2–4 weeks ahead in July–August; shoulder season a week or two usually works. Tell us your dates, group size and honest fitness level — we will confirm availability and the exact quote, usually the same day.
Frequently asked questions
How hard is the Valbona Pass hike really?
6–7 hours with about 1,000 m of ascent on a well-trodden trail — the toughest normal hike most travellers will ever love. Occasional hikers manage it fine with breaks; it is not technical in summer. If in doubt, tell us honestly and we will advise or suggest gentler valley-based versions.
What are the guesthouses like?
Family-run mountain guesthouses: simple, clean, warm, with serious home cooking — dinner and breakfast included. Some rooms share bathrooms. This is authentic Alps hospitality, not hotel luxury, and guests adore it.
What happens if weather closes the pass?
The operator monitors conditions and adjusts — reversing the route, delaying a day in the valley, or (rarely, in unsafe conditions) rerouting entirely. This is exactly why we book this only through structured partners with real backup plans.
Can we do it with children or older travellers?
Fit teenagers, absolutely. Younger children and anyone unsure about the pass: ask us about the valley-only private versions — Theth and Valbona each deserve a visit even without the crossing.
