The Bay of Kotor is 90 minutes from the Albanian border and looks like a fjord that took a wrong turn into the Mediterranean. It is the most requested cross-border day from Tirana — and with a private driver, the long day is all scenery, no stress.
How the day runs
Early hotel pick-up in Tirana (7:00–7:30 — borders and bays reward the early). North through Shkodra, across the Montenegrin border where your driver handles the formalities while you admire the lake, then the coast road reveals itself: first Budva, the Riviera's old town of stone lanes and sea walls, for a morning walk and coffee. Then the showpiece: the road around the Bay of Kotor, mountains falling straight into ink-blue water, stone villages every few minutes — Perast with its island church, and finally Kotor itself, the UNESCO walled town wedged between cliff and bay. Time to climb part of the fortress walls if your legs agree, lunch on the waterfront, and home across the border by evening. Long day, huge payoff.

Honest advice before you book
This is a long day — 10 to 12 hours — and July–August border queues can stretch it. If you can spare two days, ask us about the overnight version (Kotor by evening is magical). Documents: most passports (EU, UK, US) cross visa-free, but check your nationality; some travellers need an Albanian re-entry arrangement — tell us your passport when booking and we will confirm. Best months: May, June, September. Bring passport, comfortable shoes for Kotor's lanes, and a camera with space. Message us your date and group size — we confirm vehicle, driver, border notes and exact price in one chat.
Frequently asked questions
What documents do I need for the border?
A valid passport for everyone. EU, UK and US citizens cross visa-free; other nationalities should tell us in advance and we will confirm requirements, including Albanian re-entry. ID cards work for some EU citizens — check with us before relying on one.
Is one day really enough for Montenegro?
For Budva + the Bay of Kotor circuit, yes — it is full but well-paced with a private driver. If you want Kotor's evening atmosphere or Durmitor's mountains, ask about the 2-day version; we arrange it with the same partners.
How bad are the border queues in summer?
Variable — our drivers time crossings early and know the smaller crossings when the main one clogs. July–August weekends are the worst; another reason we push the 7:00 start. It is manageable, and we are honest when it is not.
Can we swim during the trip?
If the season and timing allow, yes — tell your driver it is a priority and the day can flex around a swim stop near Budva or in the bay. Bring swimwear just in case; May–October the water cooperates.
