If you have one long day for the south, this is the one: UNESCO Gjirokastër in the morning, the Blue Eye of Syri i Kaltër in the afternoon — the spring so blue and deep that divers still haven't found the bottom.
How the day works
Pick-up around 7:00, then south. Late morning in Gjirokastër: the castle, the tower-houses, the bazaar, and lunch on local specialities. In the afternoon, 40 minutes to the Blue Eye (Syri i Kaltër): a 25-minute walk through the oak wood to the spring, where 6 m³ of water per second boil up from a 50 m deep blue abyss. The brave swim (the water is 10°C). Home by late evening.

Why afternoon is the right time for the Blue Eye
The spring gets crowded at midday in summer with bus tours from Saranda. Arriving mid-afternoon — as private timing allows — the light turns softer, the crowds thin, and the blue gets even deeper. This is the detail that separates a good photo from the photo.
When to go and how to book
April to October is best (the spring flows all year, but the day is long — winter makes it heavy). Date and group size on WhatsApp — confirmed within the hour.
Frequently asked questions
Can you swim in the Blue Eye?
Technically yes, and people do — but the water is 10°C all year. A quick plunge is the classic; bring a towel if you dare.
How long is the day?
12–13 hours door to door, with about 6 hours of driving split into comfortable segments. It is our longest south day — private vehicle makes all the difference.
Is it suitable for children?
For kids used to car days, yes: castle cannons, cobbled bazaar, a fairy-tale spring. For very small children we suggest splitting south Albania over 2–3 days — see our multi-day tours.
Can we sleep in Saranda instead of returning?
Absolutely — many guests use this tour as a one-way transfer with sightseeing included. Ask on WhatsApp for the drop-off option.
