Berat Wine Tour — UNESCO Streets and Serious Albanian Wine

The best food-and-wine day from Tirana: Berat's castle and quarters in the morning, a premium family winery in the afternoon — Cobo or Nurellari — with guided tasting among the vines.

From €95 per personPrivate tour, hotel pick-upWinery: Cobo or NurellariAll year round

Albania has made wine for 2,000 years and almost nobody abroad knows it — which is exactly why a Berat wine day is such a find: indigenous grapes, family wineries, generous pours, and a UNESCO city thrown in as the warm-up act.

How the day flows

Hotel pick-up in Tirana, then south to Berat for the morning: the castle while the air is cool, the thousand-windowed Mangalem quarter, the Gorica Bridge. Lunch in the old town — the wine region's kitchen does the local white cheese, figs and slow-cooked clay-pot dishes proud. In the afternoon, twenty minutes into the vine-covered foothills: Cobo Winery, the polished family estate where Shesh i Bardhë and Shesh i Zi share the cellar with excellent international blends, or Nurellari, the smaller artisan favourite for traditional-method sparkling and characterful reds. A guided cellar walk, then the serious part: a seated tasting of 4–6 wines with local cheese, olives and bread. Back in Tirana for dinner, pleasantly educated.

What is included

  • Hotel pick-up and drop-off in Tirana, private air-conditioned vehicle
  • Driver-guide in English or Italian all day

Cobo or Nurellari — which one?

Cobo is the flagship: a beautiful modern cantina in the hills above Berat, polished tasting room, the full range from crisp Shesh i Bardhë to aged reserve reds — the safe, excellent choice. Nurellari is the insiders' pick: smaller, more rustic, a family that talks with its hands, and a traditional-method sparkling that surprises everyone. Both are genuine; we will recommend based on your taste and the day's logistics. Serious wine people sometimes ask for Alpeta in Roshnik — the natural-wine estate with a legendary agriturismo lunch; it works seasonally, ask us.

When to go

All year — cellars do not care about seasons, and winter tastings by the cellar fireplace are arguably the best version. Harvest season (September–early October) adds the buzz of the crush. Book a week ahead in summer and harvest; a few days suffices otherwise. Not a wine drinker in the group? The day still works — Berat carries the morning and the winery scenery carries the afternoon. Message us your date and group size; we will confirm the winery, timing and exact price in one chat.

Frequently asked questions

How much wine is actually included in the tasting?

A guided tasting of 4–6 wines with local cheese, olives and bread — proper pours, not thimbles. The premium upgrade adds reserve wines. Lunch is separate and we recommend keeping it: the day is long and the pours are honest.

I am not a wine expert — is this for me?

It is designed for you. The winery hosts explain everything without jargon, and discovering that Albania makes genuinely good wine is half the fun. Experts, meanwhile, get indigenous grapes they cannot taste anywhere else.

Can we buy bottles to take home?

Yes — cellar-door prices are a fraction of what these wines would cost abroad, and the wineries pack for travel. Most guests' only regret is suitcase space.

Is the tour possible without the Berat sightseeing part?

Possible, but we advise keeping it: it breaks up the day, and Berat is too good to skip when you are already there. A tasting-only half day can be arranged on request — just ask.
